“To confront a person with his Shadow is to show him his own light”

My body of work consists mostly of oil on canvas, with some exceptions in mixed media, to investigate and propose an alternate perspective regarding the relationship with our Shadow, a core concept of Jungian philosophy. The Shadow is composed of the parts of us that we reject, suppress, avoid, hold shame in, and try to hide from the world. I use a figurative and surrealist approach to symbolize the discovery and healing of our dynamic with it through personification. The Jungian perspective I present in my work is to change the narrative of this relationship by utilizing a curious, loving, welcoming, and nurturing approach regarding the parts within us that instinctively provoke the opposite reaction. It is my belief that the pain in our world is directly correlated to a misalignment with our Shadow by reducing it as the origin of our misgivings, trickling out actions of hatred and injustice through root feelings of shame and confusion. I propose that the Shadow exists as an opportunity to learn where we are not free within our own internal structures, and if approached with loving curiosity, it can be the catalyst to great liberation and compassion.

Ultimately, it is my core belief all the root problems in our world stem from division and lack of understanding ourselves. It is critical to create spaces of unity and transformation through healing. I am working on bringing to life an immersive and participatory experience around the central theme of the liberation on the other side of our own Shadow. When misunderstood, the Shadow can be the propeller for hate, division, and suppression, to take place. When understood, it becomes a wise teacher that brings us the opportunity of expansion, growth, compassion, liberation, and love through transmutation. Our Shadow exists to show us where we are not free. The purpose of this experience is to open the collective mind and invite them to engage in introspective exploration and healing that plants the seeds for empowerment, hope, and a more compassionate society.
